On June 30th, 2018, Hundreds of Mud Runners travelled from all corners of Kenya to dare, discover and engage at the 4th annual Upcountry Fair and Mud Run on Kenana Farm in Njoro.
The course covered about 9 kilometres of open fields, wooded trails and included 28 obstacles. Muddy sections of the course varied in depth and thickness – from ankle, knee and sometimes waist-deep muck.
Racers participated in teams of four with teams being released in intervals of one minute to allow participants to complete every obstacle. The new design of the course allowed for teams to be able to overtake each other while participants were subject to penalties for skipping or failing to complete an obstacle making the event enjoyable for racers of all skill level. Those who could push themselves beyond their limits did a fantastic job on the course.
Obstacles on the Kenana Farm were well spaced-out and multiple lanes eliminated the potential of bottle-necking unlike the previous years. Obstacles were both traditional; such as a rope climb over a wooden wall and crawling/going over tires of different sizes, as well as more creative; of note in this category was “THE FIRE PLACE”. The combination of obstacles featured both an ‘extreme’ and a standard level of difficulty which allowed racers to choose how far they wanted to push and test themselves.
Overall, the event exceeded most expectations. The Upcountry Fair and Mud Run is a fantastic outing for both beginners and experienced competitors alike as it is innovative, affordable, and very well organised.
Until next time, See you at the next outdoor event!
